Rajasthan Travel Guide for Tourists

Essential advice from The Tour Diary Jaipur operations: transportation connectivity, weather by month, authentic shopping, cultural do's and don'ts, and packing checklists.

1. How to Reach Rajasthan

By Air: Rajasthan is connected via 4 major commercial airports: Jaipur International (JAI), Udaipur Maharana Pratap (UDR), Jodhpur (JDH), and Jaisalmer (JSA - winter seasonal). Direct flights link Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Kolkata.

By Road: The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway connects Delhi to Jaipur in under 3.5 hours. Excellent 4-lane highways link Jaipur, Ajmer, Jodhpur, and Udaipur.

By Rail: Vande Bharat Express and Shatabdi link Delhi to Jaipur and Ajmer in 3.5 to 4 hours. Superfast trains connect Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Kolkata to Jaipur and Jodhpur.

2. Best Time to Visit Rajasthan

Peak Season (October to March): The weather is dry, sunny, and delightfully crisp. Daytime temperatures range from 20°C to 28°C; desert nights in Jaisalmer can dip to 7°C to 12°C. Ideal for fort exploration, wildlife safaris, and desert camping.

Monsoon Season (July to September): Udaipur, Kumbhalgarh, and Mount Abu transform into lush emerald green paradises with waterfalls and overflowing lakes.

3. Authentic Rajasthan Shopping Guide

  • Jaipur: Johari Bazaar for precious emeralds and Kundan-Meenakari jewelry; Bapu Bazaar for Jaipur quilts (Jaipuri Razai) and block-print Kurtas; Kripal Kumbh for Blue Pottery.
  • Jodhpur: Clock Tower market for Mathaniya red chilies, hand-stitched leather mojris, and antique wooden artifacts.
  • Udaipur: Hathipole for Mewari miniature paintings on silk and camel-bone paper; Old City for silver jewelry.
  • Jaisalmer: Carved yellow sandstone souvenirs, camel-leather bags, and mirrored wall hangings.

4. Cultural Etiquette & Temple Rules

Rajasthan is proud of its ancient traditions. When visiting active temples like Brahma Temple Pushkar, Ranakpur Jain Temple, or Karni Mata, remove shoes and leather belts/wallets. Dress modestly covering shoulders and knees. In holy Pushkar town, alcohol and non-vegetarian food are strictly prohibited.
